Grüße aus Somalia

For the past two decades the depiction of my people, the Somalis, in films mainly by Hollywood has not been positive. This film, QAB iyo IIL is the first of its kind since the collapse of the central government in Somalia in 1991. A film by Somalis, for Somalis and an international audience.

Acting in this film has been a whole new experience both for me and my dear departed friend, Mr. Ahmed Hassan ‚Awke‘.  Ahmed and I were known to Somalis as broadcasters. I hope this film will stand as a lasting tribute to Ahmed Hassan Awke as we mark the first anniversary of his death.

The film QAB iyo IIL narrates the climax of the senseless battle between different clans in Somalia which divided Somalis. Since the collapse of the Somali state, clan based armed clashes have been fought in the name of clan, often as a result of political leaders manipulating through clannism for their own purposes.

I also want to thank all the people who took part in the film and the director Ahmed Farah.

It is with enormous pleasure that we submit our film to your festival. Happy viewing!
